Opelika, Alabama Automobile Accident Attorney

Located in the east-central section of Alabama, Opelika is the county seat of Lee County as well as the principal city in the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Opelika’s population is more than 28,000, while the Auburn-Opelika MSA boasts some 150,000 residents.

Bordered by Auburn on the west and sitting in the southern portion of the Piedmont Plateau, a region characterized by low and rolling hills, Opelika was settled in the 1830s. White settlers named the city “Opelika,” which means “large swamp” in the area’s original Native American tongue. The city quickly became a hub for commerce, however, in the late 1800s when railways connected it to other major cities, including Birmingham.

While no longer the same city it was in the 1800s, Opelika has consistently expanded its commercial development. In 2015, Gold State Foods, the largest suppliers to the Quick Service Restaurant and retail industry, opened in Opelika and created almost 200 jobs. Opelika’s Tiger Town retail shopping center continues to expand commercial development in the area with several large anchor stores such as Kohl’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Home Depot.

Opelika is home to Southern Union State Community College. Additionally, the Auburn-Opelika MSA is home to Auburn University, one of the largest universities in the South. With such a large college student population, there are many young drivers in the Auburn-Opelika area which makes it particularly susceptible to motor vehicle accidents, including accidents involving alcohol consumption.

Opelika Automobile Accident Statistics

The Alabama Transportation Director recorded for Lee County in 2013 a total of 4,434 automobile accidents, which included 12 deaths and 1,023 injuries. Opelika itself was the site of nearly half of its county’s accidents with 2,004 automobile incidents. Of that number, four people were killed and 391 were injured in the City of Opelika. Based on these numbers for Lee County and Opelika, it is clear that those who live or travel through the area are not immune to serious automobile accidents.
